A kilowatt-hour (kWh) is the standard unit of electrical energy used by utility companies for billing. It represents the amount of energy consumed when using 1000 watts (1 kilowatt) of power for one hour. For example, a 100-watt light bulb running for 10 hours uses 1 kWh of electricity (100W ร 10h = 1000Wh = 1kWh).
Cost = Power (kW) ร Hours ร Days ร Rate ($/kWh)
First convert watts to kilowatts (divide by 1000), multiply by usage hours and days, then multiply by your electricity rate to get the total cost.
Power (Watts): Rate of energy use at any moment
Energy (kWh): Total power used over time
Think of power as speed and energy as distance traveled.
Your electricity bill shows total kWh used and the rate charged. Rates may vary by time of day (peak/off-peak), season, or usage tier. Look for the "Energy Charge" or "Supply Charge" section.
Every kWh of electricity produces about 0.92 lbs of CO2 on average in the US. Reducing consumption not only saves money but also helps the environment by lowering carbon emissions.
LED bulbs use 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs and last 25 times longer. A 10W LED replaces a 60W incandescent, saving $50+ per year per bulb.
Phantom power from devices in standby mode wastes 5-10% of home electricity. Use power strips to completely disconnect electronics when not in use.
Set thermostat 7-10ยฐF back for 8 hours daily to save 10% yearly on heating/cooling. Use programmable thermostats for automatic adjustments.
Energy Star certified appliances use 10-50% less energy. A new Energy Star refrigerator saves $300+ over its lifetime compared to older models.
Open curtains during day to reduce lighting needs. Use task lighting instead of overhead lights. Install skylights or solar tubes for natural illumination.
Clean AC filters monthly, seal air leaks, insulate properly. Well-maintained HVAC systems use 15-20% less energy and last longer.
